Nightlife in Belgrade

Belgrade's nightlife is well and truly awake and in this city you can have a lot of fun. Belgrade has a reputation for its nightlife, and with good reason. Unlike in other parts of Europe, there is no day of the week in Belgrade when you cannot have a night out. This is true whatever your age, whatever your lifestyle and however much you want to spend! In Belgrade every day is treated like Friday - people think nothing of clubbing through the night and going straight into work the next morning. That may sound unimaginably hedonistic to people from a nation where almost everything shuts at 11pm, but Belgrade's all-night bars and clubs and very cheap booze. Serbs never go out before midnight to nightclubs, so your evening should start in one of the trendy bars or restaurants! A lot of nightclubs, bars and floating river clubs along the riverbanks make Belgrade nightlife some of the most exuberant in Europe. Clubs and bars in Belgrade compete with the rest of Europe in their decor and taste in music. With some located inside the walls of the Kalemegdan Fortress, hidden in passages or up stairwells, they serve up world-class live and DJ music and often stay open well into the late hours for a stylish clientele that knows how to have fun. Recently, according to several local, regional and international news magazines, papers and news agencies, notably The New York Times and CNN, Belgrade has become quite the regional night life hub, boasting cheap drinks and accommodation in comparison to the rest of Europe and the regional capitals like Zagreb and Ljubljana. Weekend fun-seeking visitors from Europe and most notably from Croatia and Slovenia revere Belgrade as "the-place-to-be", citing friendly atmosphere, great clubs and bars, cheap drinks, language they can understand and lack of restrictive night life regulation.

Clubbing tips

Most venues are open until 4am from Tuesday through to Sunday, and some famous venues can open even on Monday. Cafés and bars are usually open until 1am every day. Entrance is usually free of charge. The music stretches from well-known European and local DJs playing house, hip-hop, R&B or drum'n'bass to the beats of turbofolk pounding into the night. The focus for nightlife is spread throughout the city: much of the activity takes place on floating river clubs anchored along the Danube and Sava. Another clubbing area, which has become a fashionable place for going out over the last four years, is Ada Ciganlija. The Makiš side of Ada Ciganlija Lake is the centre of the nightlife of Belgrade during summertime. Other pockets of nightlife are only a short walk from the Republic Square and inside the walls of the Kalemegdan Fortress.

Night Clubs

(Times Online) From the most famous house and techno at the Tube in Dorćol and commercial touch of Plastic to underground places such as Drugstore in Palilula and a number of rafts on the bank of the Sava river, Belgrade is home to many clubs. To be honest, It’s certainly not alive throughout the whole week and it certainly is neither Berlin, London nor Amsterdam, but at times it offers a lot. Parties on the various locations, from Dom Omladine and DEPO to 20/44. Clubs such as the Tube ,KC Grad, Drugstore and boat 20/44 have hosted very many big names from the electronic music industry. There are two seasons, summer/spring and fall/winter, during the summer/spring season rafts on the river Sava take charge, whilst the majority of clubs in the city are closed waiting for cold weather to start all over again with new line-ups. Belgrade club scene tends to change in a fleeting moment, one year some clubs are hip, while the next are totally the thing of the past or closed down. Belgrade has many emerging DJs and music producers and some already well established artists as Marko Nastić, Lea Dobričić, DejanMilićević, FilipXavietc. This city hosted the very first Boiler room party in SEE region during Mad in Belgrade music festival. The Tube

The Tube is a Belgrade classic. It’s located in the very heart of the city, on the corner of Simina and Dobračina streets in Dorćol. Since 2007 it has been at the forefront of the entire clubbing scene in the city. The interior, designed by architect Đorđe Gec, is beautifully minimalistic, with clearly defined lines, concrete and wood. One of its main features is a narrow, 23 meter long dance floor. The Tube offers different genres of electronic music – house, techno, deep & tech house – and hosts the most important electronic music artists from all over the globe. I have to drop a few names in here: Steve Bug, MaceoPlex, Tini, Heidi, Dixon, Ben Klock, etc. The Tube works on Friday and Saturday. Friday is reserved for foreign music stars.

KC Grad

KC Grad is a multi-functional space for various events ranging from parties, concert, art exhibitions, fashion shows, movie projections, workshops etc. In a nutshell is a ‘cultural center’. The space is powered by Cultural Front Belgrade and the Amsterdam Felix Meritis Foundation. It’s located in an old warehouse dating from 1884, in an inner-city former industrial zone known as ‘Savamala’. The club is a favourite haunting place for Belgrade hipsters and art lovers, and in broad daylight it functions as a coffee bar. KC Grad has hosted many super trendy musicians and bands such as the NYC underground band Jessica 6 and artists from Cologne Kompakt label. It is definitely a place worth a visit.

Peron Club

Peron is situated in so-called “Creative District” of Savamala in close proximity to other clubs we have mentioned such as Mladost, KC Grad, Brankow, KC Grad…It is orientated towards rock, indie, alternative, the music of the 80s. This club is at present one of the most popular in Belgrade. You can catch some Serbian bands or DJs such as Marko Gangbanger, Ognjen Krstić and similar. Prices are decent and folks are friendly. Open at weekends.

Brankow

Trendy, up-market club is located in one of the pillars of Brankov Bridge. It has a refined and quite beautiful interior, which was designed by architect Đorđe Gec. Brankow’s location is unique, representing a fusion of urban, industrial and avant garde. Similarly its music selection is also quite distinctive, from jazz and funky to house. Brankow is not a place for clubbers, it’s more of a relaxing cocktail bar. The crowd tend to be somewhat older than in the rest of Belgrade’s clubs (+30). The club has been designed for well heeled people, so the prices tend to be high.

Cekaonica Jazz Club

Cekaonica is the most famous jazz club in the city. It hosts funk, fusion and jazz musicians from Belgrade, Serbia , Balkans and abroad. Sometimes you can just catch some bossa nova jazz or a tribute band. At first they established a club on the rooftop of the BIGZ building, but eventually they had to move and after its relocation the club today is based at KPGT, Stara Secerana in Belgrade. If you are a jazz fan, look no further.

Drugstore

We are proud to present Belgrade’s techno cathedral Drugstore. The “new” Drugstore found its place in the former industrial quarter of Palilula municipality. After the great success this underground club had in Beko building in downtown, they started a new concept in this new riveting venue. which is a far cry from Berghain Berlin though, dark, raw and rough around the edges, situated in what used to be a slaughter house. Space is big (600 m2), it can accommodate up to 1000 people and it includes wide cathedral like room and corridors. The owners, some local guys, usually host big names from underground electronic music scene and throw parties on two stages. Brace yourselves up for techno, underground house and alternative bands from local and international scene. Let me drop a few names: Molly Nillson, Dasha Rush, Xanax, Trax, Elektrabel, Jor, Dimi Angelis and many more. Drugstore is an independent club, supports artists and local DJs as Filip Xavi, Tijana T, Grof, Banda Panda etc. It’s open on Fridays and Saturdays.

Drugstore Play

Yes, there’re two Drugstore clubs in Belgrade but with completely different concepts. Drugstore Play is one of those trendy and hip barges on the river where you need to follow certain dress code, make a reservation and enjoy “hot” nights. Here you won’t find “Berlin” but you will find “fancy” Dubai kind of fun. Music is usually house, R’n’B’ ,tech house and electro and it works all year round.

Plastic

Plastic was earlier on a favourite haunt for Belgrade clubbers. It is located in the same place where the famous techno club Mondo existed a very long time ago, right in the heart of the city. Nowadays, it consists of two parts: Plastic (which is more commercial) & Mint (less commercial). As for this club I can only quote the famous Serbian artist Mikrob, “Farewell Underground”. The music is basically house oriented, and the club has become very main stream, crowded with pretty faces and Serbian celebrities. It’s a popular place for Fashion Week parties and cocktails.

Club Magacin Club Magacin, a big and lavish warehouse space, is the most exclusive night club in town. It is situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers.

Mr. Stefan Brown For already seven years this flying club is burning the fantasy and entertains the city of Belgrade. It gives lots of positive energy, which is regarded by the pleasant stuff and so fulfilled with guests of the club.

Floating River Clubs

"The greatest pleasure of Belgrade, however, was its cafes and clubs. The Serbian capacity for night life is nothing short of amazing: some diehards go out seven nights a week, and still manage to make it to work the next morning." (The New York Times) The most recognizable nightlife feature of Belgrade is the floating river clubs or barges (called "splavs" or "splavovi") that are spread along the banks of the Sava and Danube Rivers.

Amsterdam Amstrdam River Club is located on the Zemun quay on the Danube. Live performance, that has been for years now synonymous with the best spent time at the river on weekand days.

Acapulco One of the oldest floating river clubs is Acapulco, a popular place for those wanting to be seen. Acapulco is recognisable for its live music every night.

20/44

This popular Belgrade splav (raft) is located on the banks of the Sava river. Mercifully it works all year round , regardless of the weather conditions. This is my favorite place to go clubbing, especially in the summer season when the dance madness kicks off on the boat deck. The raft offers a good music selection ranging from Detroit techno and soulful to disco, funky, house and dub step. 20/44 hosts one of the best clubbing nights in Belgrade, called Disco not Disco featuring local stars DJ Brka, Toshke, Schwabe and other special guests. During the summer months the splav offers a wonderful view of the old city and bridge at night, when all the lights are on. In the morning hours you can catch one of Belgrade’s breath taking sunrises. Over the winter, parties are held under the deck, where it’s warm and cosy no matter how cold it is outside. The atmosphere is always super sexy: red lights, a few screens and lots of smoke. Splav 20/44 hosts the best local DJs and also world famous stars such as Detroit techno-master MikeHuckaby and trendsetter Nicolas Jaar. The crowd is friendly and relaxed. The entrance fee is between 2 and 4 euros, and drinks are quite affordable.

Sound

Another Belgrade’s classics, and one of the best rafts on the river. It is quite popular but unfortunately only operates during the summer season. The music selection here is based on house music, and Belgrade’s best house DJs such as Peppe and Oysha play here from time to time. Sound also hosts foreign music stars. Since this is a quite an upmarket club, make sure you are all done up ‘in your Sunday’s best’ and brace yourselves up for a longish queue to make your way in. Make sure you bring loads of cash because the drinks are not cheap!

Povetarac

This is the coolest splav (raft) on the river. Here people can feel the real summer vibe of the city. It is always quite crowded, so be patient and be prepared to queue to get in. Povetarac offers a variety of music styles such as drum ‘n’ bass, hip hop, pop, house and mash ups. The atmosphere is really welcoming and people are friendly. There are also often a lot of foreigners here. Prices are cheap and almost everybody drinks beer and rakija…cocktails are totally not trendy!

Taverns

In Belgrade there are many places with live music. Such as taverns. In the current taverns live music is topical, performances by various bands too. Taverns are cheaper than clubs andthey are wearing the traditional spirit of Belgrade.

Club Kafana Tarapana

Club Tavern Tarapana the new location for the nightlife in the center of Belgrade, a place that lacked Belgrade as the capital of entertainment and nightlife. Tarapana represents a mix of the club and a bar, a phenomenal space with a capacity of 600 people, which is pushing the boundaries of good time.
Tarapana is certainly one of the most beautiful Belgrade taverns, shops in every part of you feel like you are in the center of events, so it is not surprising that soon became one of the most popular places to go.

Na Vodi Kafana
